The Wastes are already full of shit and it doesn't need more. A nineteen-years-old who was abandoned by literally everyone they have ever known in the span of a night. Not the massive inbreeding, the failure in leadership, etc etc. Because they make it clear it isn't just because you may have changed, it's because they see you as the cause of their problems. They don't care if you're good or bad or anything in between. Someone who was left behind by their father (also, who scolds you for leaving the vault and you are unable to tell him about them trying to kill you because of his actions). Someone who was literally shaken awake and told their lives in the vault were over before being forced to fight your way through in a desperate attempt to not be slaughtered by people who once deemed to keep you safe, that you may have seen as someone you cared for, as people you have known your whole life. There is also dialogue where Amata will straight up tell you the reason you cannot stay is because too many people blame you for all of their problems stemming from the day your father left. Traders and other wastelanders are allowed to come and go, but you, the person they have known for so long, is not. They open the vault AND STILL BAN YOU FROM IT. Which, assuming you side with the person who asked for your help, they will do. You can help them to either keep the vault closed or open it so they can trade and come and go as they please. The people who tossed you out with no knowledge of the outside world to die. Once you return, with Amata's desperate attempt to reach you, you can proceed to help the vault. Even if you surrender, the Overseer will kill you after you surrender your weapons. The LW went through every struggle, every good thing, every holiday, every marker with these people and they turn their back on you. Someone who is barely an adult, that they have literally either known their whole lives or watched grow up. And when your father leaves to return to Project Purity and a bunch of rad roaches get in, they attack the LW. You are literally nineteen-years-old and have been there for eighteen years. Not only this but they turn their back on you at the beginning of the game. I remember saving her a few months later in that random encounter and it was like turning the corner that things would be ok. Later you can save(or watch the death of) amata from the enclave in a random encounter where she can be found outside the vault. years of pent up pain rose to the surface and I started crying for hours. Somehow when this scene came up and amata says you saved us but you have to go cause you’ve changed.

I encountered this scene less than a week after my mom died and my family was very concerned for me because I was doing things like breaking chairs and windows and not crying about my mom being dead at all. SPOILER: Eventually after saving the entire vault amata kicks you out for having changed too much in the wasteland. I remember a few days after my mom dying I encountered the scene where you return to the vault. Then my mom died of cancer when I was 12 and I started to play fallout 3 pretty religiously.
